Tiered Skirts and Big Afros

I’m just back from Accra, Ghana where I had an amazing time attending the Glitz Style Awards as well as the pre- and post-gala parties.  With all the glitz and glamour happening throughout the 2-3 days of the overall event and inspired by all the amazingly well dressed people who had congregated there from all over Africa and beyond, I felt free to express myself and totally enjoyed being able to experiment and try out the bold hairstyles and outfits. As you know, I have had sisterlocks for quite a while now, but I am loving big afros although still trying to figure out which style works best on me, so do let me know what you think about this.

For the pre party, themed ‘vintage glam’ I opted for this fun look.  The afro gives it an 80’s vibe, tiered skirts are back and this print just brought back memories from my primary school years. I wore no accessories as the skirt and the hair were already too extra.

I am always happy when I can get a space to express myself through fashion, and I felt extremely at ease this past weekend in Accra, and as always I thoroughly enjoyed once again experiencing at first-hand how West Africans really embrace fashion and style.  This is an inspiration for the whole continent, and I am happy to be part of the change here in Kenya, as we continue to take plunges and celebrate vibrant fashion. We still have a long way to go, but we are getting there.
